We spoke to Guest In The Car about their new single ‘music for the kids’, their musical inspo and the best advice they have been given.

Guest in the car is a four piece rock band, with post-punk, post-rock, and shoegaze influences, with a debut single ‘Music for the kids’ just released. The band formed in May 2023, consisting of Rob (Rhythm guitar and vocals), Joey (Bass guitar), Jack(Drums) and James (Lead Guitar). We sat down with Rob and got to know more about Guest in the Car and their debut single.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I really love Yo La Tengo. I think they are underrated but have some great songs with some indie and shoegaze influences. I saw them by accident on my birthday and I’ve been a fan ever since.

How would you describe the music you typically make?

Dark but energetic, grounded but washy.

What is your creative process like?

Depends on the song really, but normally it’s me at 4 am spending hours writing.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given?

Just keep going and keep working hard. Never stop.

What album or songs do you turn to for inspiration when you hit a creative block?

I think “Disintegration” by The Cure has some of the best sound design of any album, so sometimes I just put that on and dissociate

How do you manage the balance of your personal life with the demands of the band?

I don’t this is my life and I love it.

How do you feel the internet and apps such as TikTok have impacted the music industry in recent years?

I think there was this panic when people in the music industry suddenly didn’t know what songs would be popular. But I think they are starting to realize that doing it the “traditional” way is still the way to go and we’ve seen bands and artists get big with their music and not just TikTok, like Chapel Roan and Fontaines D.C.

What’s your favourite song to perform live, or what is the song you most look forward to playing live in the future?

We love playing “Music For The Kids” because we all get our moments. It’s a song that just has a vibe and keeps going and I love that.

Aside from music, what hobbies or interests do you have?

I’ve always loved filming and taking photos. I just like being involved from the start of a project till the end.

What’s your guilty pleasure song?

“Hand In My Pocket” by Alanis Morissette. But I don’t feel guilty about it; that song is a banger!

Though Guest in the Car are new, they are bringing a new level of nostalgia to the music industry with their new song ‘Music for the kids’ and we hope they will continue too with their next songs. Be sure to stream their new song on all platforms and follow their social media for all updates on the band whether it be future gigs or new songs!
